Heavy weapons have the downside of being too heavy for a game with encumbrance, and ammo too precious to be using on raiders. While the later ones are better at providing a laser pistol or something near the beginning of the game, it usually isn't until mid-game that you get a good laser rifle and enough cells to make it your bread and butter. I'm sure there are ways to scrounge up the ammo and repair/maintenance tools to make those builds viable, but it seems much more dependent on outside knowledge, while a first-time playthrough has the player tripping over shotguns. I know there are a couple of builds that start you off with a laser pistol or grenade launcher in SS2, but that just sounds like a good way to be stuck swinging the wrench after the ammo or durability runs out quickly. Conventional weapons are more readily available at the start of the game, which is key since immersive sims are notorious for having an inverted difficulty curve. Ammo for conventional arms is plentiful in comparison which is useful since the nature of immersive sims means clearing out nuisance enemies from rooms you're trying to explore more often than big drag out fights. I'm playing through System Shock 2 for the first time (late to the party, I know) and boring conventional arms just seem like they're head and shoulders above the other options. Anyone actually spec into any weapon category other than small arms on their first time through a game, without outside knowledge?
